Plenary Speaker:
Dr. Theodore Garland, Jr.
http://www.biology.ucr.edu/people/faculty/Garland.html
Our plenary speaker is a Professor of Biology in the Department of Biology at the University of California Riverside. Dr. Garland’s research focuses on understanding the evolution of complex phenotypes. He studies the evolution and phenotypic plasticity of physiological systems in lizards, snakes, small mammals, and other organisms. Dr. Garland’s research also integrates many other aspects of biology, including behavior, biochemistry, and morphology. Through the use of empirical, theoretical, and methodological studies, he has also helped develop the new field of evolutionary physiology.
Plenary Address (Saturday March 8, 9:05-9:50am)
Dr. Nelson G. Hairston, Jr.
http://www.eeb.cornell.edu/hairston/hairston.html
Our keynote speaker is a Frank H. T. Rhodes Professor of Environmental Science in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Senior Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University. Dr. Hairston’s research focuses on the interaction between microevolutionary, population, community, and ecosystem processes. He studies how organisms deal with variable environments and has helped develop a method to assess the rates of evolutionary and ecological change. Dr. Hairston’s research also includes studies of the predator-prey relationships between algae and rotifer, the effect that zooplankton community structure has on nutrient cycling, and the factors influencing the abundance of the invasive aquatic plant Eurasian Water Milfoil.
Keynote Address (Saturday March 8, 8:00-9:00pm)
